1. Creating Ad Unit
Login to your AdSense account and navigate to “My Ads” tab. Click on “Ad units” option available under “Content” section and then click on the “+ New ad unit” button to create a new AdSense ad unit.

AdSense offers four types of ads – Text and Display (image) ads, matched content ads, in-feed ads and in-article ads.

When creating display ads ensure to choose the ad type as “Text and display ads”. Remember the default is selected from the list based on your account settings under “Settings > Ad display”. you’ll loose revenue by only choosing text or display ads only option.
4. Choose Text Ad Style
This is the most important part in AdSense ad creation process where you’ll actually influence without any base recommendation from Google. This essentially means individual publishers need to customize the ad style based on their site design. Choose the style which you think is more suitable for your site.

If you have a custom channel with the name as “large skyscraper ads on sidebar” with ads of 300×600 in the channel then the chance of the advertiser choosing your site is more. Select the “Targeting” checkbox if you want the advertisers to view your custom channels for targeted ad placements.

It is not necessarily Google should always show an AdSense ad whenever a page with an ad code is loaded. There are many possibilities for not displaying ad on a page. One reason could be your ad blocking settings where you don’t allow many networks and categories resulting in no ad inventory at that time of request. This factor is indicated as “Coverage” and low coverage indicates that ads not displayed on your site on all the time. Besides working on improving your coverage it’s important to choose what to display on the ad space if Google can’t find ads at any point of time. you have three options to choose here:
Show empty space of that ad size.
Show a solid space of that ad size.

You can choose one of the recommended ads or click on the dropdown to choose your desired ad unit. Following are the broader categories of ad units and each category will have ad units of specified sizes.

- Google allows placing 3 content ads and 3 link unit ads and 2 search boxes on any page complying with AdSense policies.

- Certain individual ads are restricted to use one unit per page. For example you can place only one ad unit of horizontal banner of ad size 970×90 on a page (besides other ad units).
- Responsive ads adjust the size automatically based on the space available on the viewing device hence suitable for sites with responsive layouts.
- Avoid using custom ad sizes which will result in reduction of revenue since there may not be any bids from the advertisers for your custom size.
Finding the Better Choice
If you are not sure about choosing the ad size select the bigger sized one fitting your ad space possibly from the recommended ads. The reason is that recommended ads will have more inventory than other ads ensuring high ad coverage and the possibility of higher revenue.
